Modeling Illustrates That Genomic Selection Provides New Opportunities for Intercrop Breeding

چکیده
Intercrop breeding programs using genomic selection can produce faster genetic gain than intercrop phenotypic selection. Intercropping is an agricultural practice in which two or more component crops are grown together. It lead to enhanced soil structure and fertility, improved weed suppression, better control of pests diseases. Especially subsistence agriculture, intercropping has great potential optimize farming increase profitability. However, for varieties complex as it requires simultaneous improvement that combine well the field. We hypothesize significantly simplify accelerate process intercropping. Therefore, we used stochastic simulation compare four different implementing program entirely based on assumed three levels correlation between monocrop grain yield investigate how strategies impacted by this factor. found all simulated produced regardless with yield. suggest a strategy combines trait information predict general ability accuracy early stages minimize generation interval.

Biotechnology Provides New Tools for Plant Breeding
Biotechnology in its broadest sense refers to the use of living organisms or their components to provide useful products. This definition can include activities as diverse as making wine, beer, or bread; composting organic materials; releasing parasitic wasps to control insect pests; breeding plants or animals; and producing crops and livestock. In fact, agriculture itself can be considered to ...

Computer mating programs have helped breeders minimize pedigree inbreeding and avoid recessive defects by mating animals with parents that have fewer common ancestors. With genomic selection, breed associations, AI organizations, and on-farm software providers could use new programs to minimize genomic inbreeding by comparing genotypes of potential mates. Relationships could be computed between...

With more and more Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) being identified throughout the genome, some of those SNPs will be found to be located within candidate genes, allowing the researchers to use the candidate gene approach on a genomewide scale. SNPs have some drawbacks but when compared to other markers they are more efficient and SNP consortium is growing to meet the requirements of gen...

متن کاملWill genomic selection be a practical method for plant breeding?
BACKGROUND Genomic selection or genome-wide selection (GS) has been highlighted as a new approach for marker-assisted selection (MAS) in recent years. GS is a form of MAS that selects favourable individuals based on genomic estimated breeding values. Previous studies have suggested the utility of GS, especially for capturing small-effect quantitative trait loci, but GS has not become a popular ...
